On September 29, I had the exciting opportunity to photograph one of the most adrenaline-pumping events in the world of motocross: a race at The Wick in Southwick, Massachusetts. Known for its legendary deep sand track, The Wick offers a unique challenge for riders, making it one of the most beloved stops on the motocross circuit. The energy, the dust, and the heart-pounding roar of the engines created the perfect backdrop for capturing some truly dynamic moments.

The Wick’s track is notorious for its demanding terrain. With every lap, the sand changes, creating unpredictable conditions that test even the most skilled riders. The air was filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation as fans lined the track, ready to witness the intense competition. The golden light of the late September afternoon cast long shadows, adding depth to the shots and enhancing the overall mood of the day.

Motocross is all about speed and agility, and capturing the essence of that in a still frame is no small feat. Throughout the day, I focused on getting close-ups of the riders tackling the most difficult sections of the track, as well as wide shots that highlight the sheer magnitude of the terrain. The moments of riders catching air over jumps and fighting to stay balanced in the deep sand were some of the most dramatic, and I made sure to emphasize the grit and determination on their faces as they powered through each lap.

My ApproachTo capture the fast-paced action, I worked with a high shutter speed, ensuring each shot froze the motion of the bikes in mid-air and preserved the flying dirt in crisp detail. I also focused on creating a sense of movement by tracking the riders as they sped past, using panning techniques to blur the background slightly while keeping the rider in sharp focus. This approach brought a dynamic feel to the photos, giving viewers a sense of just how fast and intense the action really was.

As the day drew to a close, I was left with a collection of photos that told the story of the day's races. The Wick in Southwick proved once again why it’s a staple in the motocross world, and I’m thrilled to have captured a small piece of its magic.
